When you think of getting a six-pack not everyone in boating knows it can mean something other than reaching for a cold one. I don’t profess to have known the difference for more than a couple of years. I do know that earning a U.S. Coast Guard Six-Pack or Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) captain’s license made me a better captain.

    • The evolution of down east inspired designs during the past several decades has been an interesting process to observe. This genre of design was inspired by the salty, no-nonsense Maine-built lobster boats. Occasionally a yachtsman commissioned a yard to finish a hull with a “yacht” interior, although they were still rather basic when it came to styling and amenities. Eventually boats from Maine builders such as Wilbur, Jarvis-Newman, Spencer, and Wesmac began to carve their own slice of the pie, gracing waterways around North America.

What Lies Beneath : Understanding the basics of hull design is the key to finding the right boat

    • I had been in the Bahamas for about six weeks doing pretty much nothing other than some fishing and cruising the island of Abaco, by boat and motorcycle. I was on my second Five Star Barbancourt, a rich Haitian rum, using the free WiFi at Curlytails Bar in Marsh Harbour when I saw the “Hello from Boat Digest” in the subject line of an e-mail. Uh-oh, he found me. I always feel guilty when I get an e-mail from George, our Editor at Boat Digest. George started the e-mail with a few pleasantries and then moved on to the more serious “hey Mr. Technical Editor, do you think you could find it in your busy day, between naps maybe, to do a piece on hull design?”

    • Let’s go fishing! That’s the unmistakable message delivered by the Dusky 33 center console open, especially one equipped with the innovative Geared Up propulsion system that marries an electronically controlled 480 hp Yanmar Turbodiesel to twin Mercruiser Bravo I sterndrives. This provides a unique combination of performance, reliability and fuel economy.

True Colors : Proper Flag Etiquette is a Tradition Worth Preserving

    • I knew a captain who had two rules, or you could be removed from the boat. The first is you always had to wear a knife on your belt while on board. This was a safety measure more than anything. I think with the introduction of the multi-tool, it also became a matter of convenience. If you see a loose screw, you’re more apt to tighten it if you have a screwdriver on the hip.

The Joy of Boating : Smart Engineering and Design Make the Cranchi's Mediterranee a Sound Choice for Serious Fun on the Water

    • It’s tough to decide which part of my sea trial in the Cranchi Mediterranée 43 was more fun—steering with my fingertips on the IPS joystick at idle in the Intracoastal Waterway or flying through six-foot seas offshore at 33 knots, hanging onto the wheel. Actually, lounging at the dock in the 43’s comfortable cockpit wasn’t too shabby either. This versatile beauty, which we recently tested in Pompano Beach, Florida, combines the latest breakthroughs in propulsion technology with a sea-savvy performance hull and luxurious Italian styling.

Docking Fundamentals : When backing into a slip in heavy winds, it pays to remember the basics.

    • Have you ever screwed up a docking approach so much that you continue to ponder it for a few weeks afterwards? This one blemish seems to taint all the joy of the boating experience you had just moments before. Well, if you haven’t stopped reading, you can move to the head of the class. If you have and want a few more tips on docking, specifically when backing down into a slip around pilings, read on.

Method, Not Madness : Proper Planning will ensure you have the electronics package best suited for your boat.

I Could've Had a V-8 : Yamaha Introduces a 350 hp outboard and model years are eliminated

  • Outboard
    • Is the boating world ready for a 350 hp 4-stroke V-8 outboard? When I first heard about this 804-pound heavyweight, I had some serious doubts. But the growing ground swell of comments and observations trickling down the information pipeline in recent weeks has chiseled away at my personal reservations. Many of the larger boatbuilders have already expressed serious interest in the 350, including Grady-White, and one dealer has ordered 160 engines. Availability is expected for July.
